In 1940, the present fair grounds became the home for the Story County 4-H Fair.  That has been 75 years of outstanding youth and excellent projects.  We have much to celebrate at this year’s youth fair.

Story County families have lots of 4-H history in their families.  Who do you know that have several generations of 4-H’ers in their family?  Please let them know that the 4-H History Committee would love to hear their story.  

When you are exploring your family history, keep the “4-H’ers in Action” photo classes in mind.  There are 4-H classes plus open classes for any adult or youth to enter.  You can enter a photo of any 4-H’er in action, past or present.  You can enter a photo of a grandparent when they were an active 4-Her.  There is a special class for any 4-H photos taken at the 1940 Fair.  There will be cash prizes.  Questions?  Ask JoAnn Blanchard (515-290-1294).

We will honor individuals who have shown the Grand Champion Market Steers since 1940.  This will be part of the 4-H Reunion on July 26.  While our list has been growing, we still need names and addresses of those in1988, 1996 - 1999 and 2005.  If you know anyone of these, please share name and address with Michelle Gibson (Phone: 515-450-4329).

The collection of county fair books from the 1940s to today is nearly complete.  Missing books range from 1941 – 1945 plus 1947 and 1958.  Record books and historian books are good places to look.  Fair books may be left at the Extension Office for the 4-H History Committee.

We are also searching for more photos taken at the 1940 county Fair.  These would be put in a Fair History notebook.  Any help you can give us will be greatly appreciated.  See you at the 75-Year Celebration at the 2015 Story County Youth Fair.

Nevada Victory Tea - May 16, 2015

The NevadaHistorical Society is hosting a “Victory Tea”- 40’s style, May 16th at the Dyer Dowell Victorian Home, 2PM – 4 PM, located at 927 5^th Street. 

 

If you enjoyed big bands, hats, sandwiches, cakes, and memories of yesteryear, this is the tea for you. Relax and go back in time. There will be a short program during the tea.

Prepaid reservations are required. Space is limited and the deadline for reservations is May 9th. Cost is $15.00 for adults and $10.00 for school age children. Contact is Jane Nading 290-4217

If you have not toured this Victorian home, tours will be available after the tea for any interested parties.

Also, after the tea, the Nevada Historical Museum will be open for tours to view the display of military uniforms and equipment, and historical items.

Story City Spring Dinner - April 30, 2015

Join us at the Carriage House Museum for the Story City Historical Society's Spring Dinner. A free-will donation Scandinavian themed dinner will be provided, including Norwegian meatballs, potatoes, corn, and a variety of Scandinavian desserts! 

Following the meal will be a presentation on the Historical Society, updating our members and the community on the status of the Historical Society and our plans for the future. Plus we will have a short game of trivia with prizes!

Slater Area Historical Association Pancake Breakfast - April 25, 2015

The Slater Area Historical Association will be having a Kick-Off Pancake Breakfast at Heritage Hall from 7 - 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 25th.  Learn about their Back to the Future plans for the addition and remodeling of Heritage Hall.

Ames Historical Society Lecture - March 26, 2015

George Judisch: Pharmacist and Philanthropist

George Judisch was a prominent businessman in Ames beginning in the 1890s, owning a pharmacy on Main Street for more than 50 years.  In addition to serving the community through his business, he had an impact on Ames as a faculty member at Iowa State and as an early board member of civic institutions such as the hospital and library.  George's legacy also includes the positive publicity he brought to Ames through his involvement in state and national organizations.  

This is the next lecture in the Ames Historical Society's Annual Lecture Series.  Location: Ames City Auditorium, 520 Sixth Street, Ames, Iowa.

A Taste of Coffee & Color - Story City February 15, 2015

The Story City Historical Society will be hosting A Taste of Coffee & Color, a coffee tasting event on Sunday, February 15th from 1-3 p.m.  The event will be held at Fairview Lodge, located in Story City’s North Park on Grove Ave.

Join us for a sampling of coffees and desserts! You will have the chance to sample 5 flavors of coffee from KaffeGeita. This year you will be able to taste two new flavors of coffee and vote on which flavor KaffeGeita will carry at the shop. A variety of mini desserts will be served, all made by local bakers including Robyn from The Bistro and Silver from Silver's Spoon Bakery.

Along with the great coffee and desserts, entertainment will be provided by artist Molly Nagel from Upper Story Studio. She will have a variety of her artwork on display as well as a stamping project to try. Molly's artwork will be available for sale. A collection of vintage coffee pots and grinders will also be on display. Plus, live music from local musician Pat Hashman!

Tickets are $12.00 per person or $20.00 for a pair. Tickets are available at the Carriage House Museum, GCC Office (524 Broad St), or at KaffeGeita.

Proceeds benefit the Story City Historical Society.

Slater Area Historical Association Lunch and Annual Meeting - February 11, 2015

The Slater Area Historical Association will hold its Annual Members Meeting at noon on Wednesday, February 11.  A free lunch will be served with the meeting to follow.  A review of 2014 and a preview of 2015 activities will be presented. Everyone is welcome.
